Indra Gutierrez, president of Gutier in Missouri City, Texas, loves working on challenging issues. “Construction, in my opinion, is one of the toughest industries to be in,” she said.
“Our impact goes beyond the project sites. We make a difference in our communities and contribute toward building the future in many different ways through the work that we do.”
When it comes to being a woman in the industry, Gutierrez noted that a major barrier they face is women being seen as less ambitious or driven when it refers to their careers. “This assumption may lead to women being overlooked for more opportunities within their organizations.”
One misconception Gutierrez would like to debunk is that a career in construction is only for men. “It is not. A lot of the attributes and skills that come naturally to women are a huge advantage in this industry.”
She built her own construction company alongside her husband, Michael, from the ground up without any outside capital. She considers this one of the most pivotal moments in her career.
Gutierrez credits “an extraordinary team of advisors that have built many construction companies, and they have been instrumental in helping me build Gutier.”
She advises industry leaders that to better support and retain women in construction to be intentional about recruiting more women. “Look for women outside the construction industry,” she said. “There’s a lot of talent in other industries that this industry desperately needs. Take the time to listen and understand their feedback, perspective and insights.”
Gutierrez is intentional about recruiting women to the industry. “I always try to provide opportunities for women to advance their careers within my organization,” she added.
The advice she would give her younger self? “Be patient with your career. Success is not achieved overnight. Enjoy the journey as you continue to work toward your professional growth. Embrace the setbacks, as they will not define your future as long as you continue to propel forward.”
While her work and personal life are very blended, when Gutierrez is not at work, she enjoys spending time with her husband and their golden retriever.
“I also enjoy a good workout,” she added. “I stay physically active by doing a HIIT or spin class.”
