Software used in competition to help students learn construction management

PORTSMOUTH, N.H. (April 1, 2015)—B2W Software announced that Utah Valley University (UVU) has leveraged the company’s construction project estimating software B2W Estimate through its B2W Educate Program in order to achieve Top Five placement within the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Regions 6 and 7 student competition.

UVU is the largest public university in the state, offering 34,000 students degrees across 100 subjects, including construction management.

Students competed against 20 other schools and were observed by 200 attending sponsor companies. Judges noted UVU students for their high level of organization, knowledge and analysis of production, crews and subcontractors. As a result of their B2W Estimate-enhanced presentation, the students achieved fourth place and two students were offered employment from competition sponsors.

The ASC competition is a comprehensive educational opportunity enabling college students to apply classroom lessons to real-world construction projects. As part of the process, construction companies offer active project challenges for students to solve, helping them prepare for future careers as construction management professionals. The primary competition objective required participants to effectively manage hundreds of pieces of equipment, analyze labor hours, accurately estimate costs and coordinate with supervisors.

"These construction competitions are extremely challenging, so we needed to arm our students with the best possible tools to ensure a winning outcome. I rely on B2W’s software with the work I do for my own employer, and have realized the benefits first hand. Leveraging this solution for my students was an easy choice,” said Ed Kluber, faculty advisor and adjunct professor at Utah Valley University.

Kluber also manages estimating for Condie Construction, a Utah based specialist in pipeline and infrastructure installation. For more information, visit B2W.
