Big-D Construction Completes First Phase of the Utah Transit Authority Clean Fuels Technology Center

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (June 23, 2021) — Featuring a new wash building, facilities for both satellite and integrated diesel fueling with an existing CNG bus fueling building, and a parking lot for employees and visitors of Utah Transit Authority (UTA), Big-D Construction recently marked the completion of its first phase of UTA’s Depot District Clean Fuels Technology Center (DDCFTC). 

Located in the historic area of downtown Salt Lake City that was the former Denver and Rio Grande railroad yard (just west of Rio Grande Depot), the new DDCFTC will ultimately become an 80,000-square foot bus maintenance facility to store, operate, maintain and service 135 buses on a regular basis. The facility will also contain room for future expansion, anticipating the continued growth of Salt Lake City’s population. 

Phase II is already underway and will add 132,892 square feet of administration, operation and maintenance facilities, as well as canopied parking for the entire fleet of natural gas and electric vehicles. The entire $95 million project is expected to be completed in Spring, 2023.

UTA’s DDCFTC project is being constructed in order to achieve a variety of sustainable goals, which will include the reduction of environmental harms and performance optimization. Sustainable features include heated floors throughout the facility, the recycling of existing materials and the implementation of modern translucent glazing systems to provide natural daylight and reduce glare.
