Inside Heavy Equipment Trends for 2024

Manufacturers are prepared to meet the demand with a robust product portfolio, and they are expanding product offerings to include new compact track loaders, mini excavators, log loaders and material handlers.

Emphasis on Equipment Safety Technologies 

Safety is of the utmost importance at construction jobsites and will be a major focus in 2024 too. Manufacturers will continue to emphasize designing heavy equipment technologies with advanced safety features such as proximity sensors (object detection), rearview and around-view monitor (AVM) camera systems and blind spot monitoring.

Around-View Monitor Camera Systems

Camera systems such as AVMs have become very popular on heavy equipment, especially wheel loaders. These systems use cameras mounted on the machine to provide as much as 270 degrees of visibility to the surrounding area, giving the operator better situational awareness. AVM systems allow operators to see potential hazards and obstacles that may not be visible from their seat, reducing the risk of accidents and injuries. They also improve productivity and efficiency by reducing the time required for operators to look around and check their surroundings manually.

Object Detection

Object detection improves safety by enhancing operator awareness. Sensors emit a sound to alert the driver when they are about to bump into an object. The sound may get louder or more frequent the closer the machine gets to the object. The sensors are often supported by a camera that allows the operator to see what’s behind them as they are reversing.

Continued Focus on Environmental Stewardship

Good stewardship of the environment will remain a focus for the industry. Electric energy, often referred to as green energy, is becoming more common, specifically in compact equipment like mini excavators. And it’s moving up into larger construction equipment, as was evident during CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023. In recent years, several equipment manufacturers have displayed prototype or pilot machines powered by batteries.

Because they recognize the global trend toward becoming carbon neutral, and are considering the tremendous increase in the production of electric vehicles, manufacturers are designing and producing electric construction equipment to meet the demand. These changes have reduced toxic emissions distributed into the atmosphere and the reliance on aftertreatment devices in equipment. This focus is front and center for many manufacturers with research and development of low-emission diesel technology, as well as a substantial investment in alternative power. 

The technology for alternative power continues to evolve very quickly, enabling longer operation with less charging time. One of the biggest advantages of electric equipment is fuel savings. The cost of diesel fuel can be a major concern for operators, especially if they have large projects to complete or are working in less populated areas where fuel must be transported longer distances.

Advancements in Autonomous Technology

Improvements in autonomous technology will impact construction equipment for the foreseeable future. Autonomy can enhance safety by reducing the need for operators on high-risk jobsites. This technology also allows remote monitoring and control, offering real-time insights into equipment performance and enabling quick responses to any issues that may come up.

Autonomous technology is also in the works for many manufacturers, and some are already testing wheel loaders and excavators that can operate without an operator in the cab. Companies at CONEXPO-CON/AGG 2023 showcased the latest autonomous technology for the construction industry in a demonstration area. These machines will have the power to navigate through complex environments and perform a variety of tasks, reducing the risk to people on dangerous jobsites.
