December 2007: Technically Speaking Print E-mail

Q:

Last year, I hired a new estimator and he talked me into purchasing “XYZ” software for our electrical contracting firm. I was fine with the product and the results. Trouble is, now this guy is gone and I have no one else who knows how to use the program.  I am interviewing for the position now, but so far, I haven’t found anyone with experience on the program.  Do I make it a requirement for the job, or possibly lose my software investment?

October 2007: Technically Speaking Print E-mail

Q:

Can you recommend the best place to go for information (in layman’s terms) about estimating software for electrical contractors? I run a busy subcontracting company, and I don’t want to waste a lot of time researching technology products that may or may not have the features we need. Mainly, we are interested in replacing our spreadsheet system with software that can be customized to handle our assemblies and interface with our job cost accounting system. Any suggestions on where to start?

Q:

I recently purchased a new accounting software program for our contracting company.  The salesman promised that we would be live within two weeks. It’s been more than a month and we are still not there. I’m ready to scrap the whole thing and go back to our old system. What do you suggest I do?

September 2007: Technically Speaking Print E-mail

Q:

I am having trouble finding a way to get my accounting software to handle retainage.  Because our reports don’t show retainage, my accountant says it appears as though we have past due receivables or we are not billing properly. We currently track retainage in a separate spreadsheet and alter our billings month-to-month. Is there a better way?
