Kevin Howe, owner of Juniper Construction, was surprised to walk onto his jobsite one morning in March 2004 to find three severed locks, two ransacked trailers and more than $8,000 in missing tools, equipment and construction materials. In addition to costing Howe thousands of dollars in stolen tools, the Juniper staff spent more than 100 hours tracking down the invoices for the stolen items and dealing with the insurance claim, an estimated productivity loss of about $3,700.
