A U.S. Census Bureau report placed the value of all commercial/industrial construction projects in 2007 at approximately $673 billion. For many contractors, capturing a share of that work was predicated on their ability to secure a surety bond. According to preliminary estimates by the reinsurance community, approximately $5.3 billion in surety bonds were written in 2007.

A subcontractor is excavating, grading and preparing the site for foundation work on a fifteen-story condominium tower in a suburban area.  During the course of this work, the contractor unearths what appear to be metal drums.  Further investigations reveal these drums to contain a multitude of hazardous waste and chemicals of unknown origin, which are later found to have leaked into subsurface soils, causing contamination throughout the project site.

healthinsurance.jpgFor a growing number of employers, health care costs continue to rise while options for providing coverage continue to dwindle. Nowhere is that truer than in the construction industry, where the cost of health care plans has grown so high that only about half of today's companies provide any type of companywide coverage. At those companies that don't offer some type of coverage, their ability to compete is diminishing. The best workers increasingly are moving to those companies that do offer some type of health care.
