Mechanical solutions provider receives the 2016 WBC Craftsmanship Award for outstanding quality, execution on large-scale hospital project

ROCKVILLE, Maryland (February 9, 2016) – Shapiro & Duncan Inc. announced that it has been recognized by the Washington Building Congress’ 2016 WBC Craftsmanship Award program for their HVAC Piping installations at HCA StoneSprings Hospital Center in Dulles, Virginia. Shapiro & Duncan will be celebrated for their achievement, along with the rest of this year’s winners, at a ceremony set to take place on March 18, 2016, at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, D.C.

The WBC Craftsmanship Awards bring public recognition to those who demonstrate exceptional workmanship and individual effort on a variety of project types on an annual basis.  Now in its 60th year, the program has recognized more than 10,900 craftsmen on over 3,000 winning projects.

Loudoun County’s first new hospital in over 100 years, the HCA StoneSprings Hospital Center project officially opened for patients on December 7, 2015. The five-story, 230,000 square foot facility sits on 51 acres and consists of 124 all-private rooms, as well as a 24-hour emergency department, intensive care unit, labor and delivery unit, nursery, imaging department, laboratory, pharmacy and cafeteria, as well as an on-site, five-story medical office building. Throughout the course of the project, Shapiro & Duncan was responsible for the full installation of the plumbing and HVAC systems, including medical gases, acid waste, fuel oil, steam, deionized water and water storage tanks.

The Shapiro & Duncan team installed eleven custom air handling units along with 400 Variable Air Volume and Phoenix boxes in the hospital, working amidst a number of architectural challenges, such as limited available space to outfit key systems, strict compliance with duct cleanliness regulations and a fast track project schedule. The Shapiro & Duncan team consisted of 156 field members under the experienced supervision of a senior foreman and four additional foremen to keep all activities on-schedule and within budget.

“We are proud to accept this recognition for our recent work on the HCA StoneSprings Hospital Center project, already being touted as the ‘Hospital of the Century,’” Shapiro & Duncan’s CEO, Sheldon Shapiro, said. “The scope and end results are a crystal clear reflection of the high quality workmanship and expertise we have continued to build our reputation on, and we are thrilled to have been a part of such an exciting, rewarding project that will bring additional healthcare facilities to area residents and their families.”
